Description

Isolate and differentiate Enterobacteriaceae from potable water, dairy products and foods with this differential medium.

Isolate and differentiate Enterobacteriaceae from potable water, dairy products and foods1, 2 with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Endo Agar (Dehydrated) when used with basic fuchsin BR0050. Originally designed for the isolation of typhoid bacillus3, Endo Agar is now mostly used for the differentiation of lactose fermenting and lactose non-fermenting intestinal organisms. Production of both acid and aldehyde by lactose fermenting organisms, such as Escherichia coli, gives rise to the characteristic red coloration of the colony and the surrounding medium.

Use Endo Agar for detection of coliform organisms in water, wastewater and dairy products for the presence of indicator groups such as coliforms. Besides safety, indicator groups provide a measure of food quality and spoilage potential. One of the most common groups of bacteria employed as indicator organisms by the food industry are the coliforms, which can be regarded as a subgroup within the Enterobacteriaceae.

  • Easy-to-read: lactose fermenting coliforms (e.g. Escherichia coli) give rise to deep red colonies which color the surrounding medium and possesses a golden metallic sheen. Non-lactose fermenters form colorless translucent colonies, against the pink to colorless medium.
  • Can be used for confirmation of presumptive test coliforms.
