Description
Kcna2 is a voltage-gated potassium channel (KV) that belongs to the 6-TM family of potassium channel and also comprises the Ca2+-activated Slo (actually 7-TM) and the Ca2+-activated SK subfamilies. The alpha-subunits contain a single pore-forming region and combine to form tetramers. Potassium channels represent the most complex class of voltage-gated ion channels from both functional and structural standpoints. The diverse functions of potassium channels include regulating neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume. Four sequence-related potassium channel genes - shaker, shaw, shab, and shal - have been identified in Drosophila, and each has been shown to have human homolog(s). The Kcna2 gene encodes a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated, shaker-related subfamily. Kcna2 contains six membrane-spanning domains with a shaker-type repeat in the fourth segment. Further, Kcna2 belongs to the delayed rectifier class, members of which allow nerve cells to efficiently repolarize following an action potential. The coding region of the Kcna2 gene is intronless, and the gene is clustered with genes KCNA3 and KCNA10 on chromosome 1. Diseases associated with KCNA2 include Epileptic Encephalopathy (Early Infantile, 32) and Undetermined Early-Onset Epileptic Encephalopathy.Specifications
