Description
Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 4 (TIMP4) is encoded by the gene TIMP4 located on chromosome 3. It belongs to the family of TIMP genes and is known to inhibit the activity of matrix metalloproteinases. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are a group of proteinases that degrade the components of extracellular matrix. TIMP4 irreversibly binds to MMPs and inactivates them with the help of zinc as a cofactor. The netrin domain of TIMP4 is involved in platelet recruitment and aggregation. Other biological functions include response to cytokine and peptide hormone stimuli and involvement with the ovulation cycle and CNS development.Specifications
