General Description
- Bilirubin is a degradation product of heme following the activity of heme oxidase. Bilirubin is produced in the reticuloendothelial system and conjugated in the liver. It appears as an orange-yellow pigment that is secreted in the bile
- High levels of unconjugated bilirubin can result in jaundice, a condition of the yellowing of skin and eyes. This can be toxic and may be a sign of severe liver disease
- Bilirubin has been seen to have functions including cell signaling, metabolism modulation, and immune regulation
- It has protective antioxidant activity at moderate levels
Application
- Bilirubin is widely used in studies of liver function and disease, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis
- As an antioxidant, bilirubin has been studied in protection against H2O2-mediated cell death
- It can be used as a scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or as an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase
